About the counselling service
My name is Sheelagh Garvey. What I offer is my training and life experience over a number of years. I am a qualified Counsellor with a B.Sc. in Counselling and Psychotherapy, registered with the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and also with the National Association of Pastoral Counsellors and Psychotherapists.
I completed my B.Sc in Counselling and Psychotherapy through PCI ( Middlesex University , London.) and have worked with survivors of abuse as part of the HSE service , and also with University students as part of the N.U.I. counselling service for the last number of years. I have also worked as part of the ACCORD services counselling both couples and individuals.
My interest in therapy developed over a number of years of working with children, using counselling approaches in a classroom setting. I trained as a homeopath and worked in the Rape Crisis Centre and also in private practice.
From the experience I’ve gained , I like to work in a holistic way taking account of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs of the person. Coming from an educational background I also like clients to understand their therapy. My approach is Client centered. I use CBT as well as combining aspects of Gestalt, and other approaches depending on what suits the clients. I believe clients have their own inner knowing of what works best for them. Some of the options I work with are Music ,Art, Imagery, Writing etc.
As required by the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, I am in regular supervision and follow an ongoing programme of continued professional development.
I have worked with groups in delivering personal development programmes, and Transformational Healing Workshops.
